Americans in Paris: the French Connection from the Wichita Art Museum Collection
Art Show

The Wichita Art Museum presents gems from its prized American art collection to reflect the vital cultural phenomenon of Americans in Paris. This exhibition complements the Monet to Matisse: French Moderns from the Brooklyn Museum, 1850–1950 that will be on view beginning February 24, 2018. The exhibitions will explore the deep relationship Americans had with evolving theories and styles incubated in France. With the rise of industrialism and resulting shifts in cities and society, artists sought new means to express their evolving world. Impressionists rejected the rigid realism and protocols of the academy. Later modernists rejected polite subject matter and conventions of representation once essential for artistic success. American artists took part in these seismic shifts across the history of 19th- and 20th-century modernism, and the Wichita Art Museum collection holds exemplary works of art that offer a rich survey of this critical art history.
