Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty

Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty

Art Show, Museum, Photography
Photography became a defining medium of the 20th century. Irving Penn (1917–2009) is one of the 20th-century masters of photography with an unrivaled career that spanned commerce and art." Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty" includes 146 photographs from all stages of the artist’s career, and it is a project organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum from its rich collection gifted by The Irving Penn Foundation. The exhibition is the first Penn retrospective in nearly 20 years.Irving Penn uniquely straddled commercial photography for Vogue and other slick illustrated magazines and the fine art world with exhibitions at major museums. His camera captured images of fashion, portraiture, still life, and travel that transcended standard fare. Penn’s pictures—a unique blend of classical elegance and experimental innovation—were widely seen during his long career at Vogue magazine. His achievement extends beyond the standards for representing beauty or fame, and it involves a full reconsideration of how we understand fashion and art as well as how they intersect and where they divide.
