Candid Conversations Book Club

Candid Conversations Book Club

Come to the Maya Angelou Branch Library for a special after-hours book discussion as part of our Candid Conversation series, programs looking at issues of race in our community and country. This month's book discussion will be on Debby Irving's book Waking Up White, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race. "Waking up White is a brutally honest, unflinching exploration of race and personal identity, told with heart by a truly gifted storyteller. Much as Irving's family sought to shield her from the contours of the nation's racial drama, so too do far too many white Americans continue to do the same. For their sakes, and ours, let's hope Irving's words spark even more truth-telling. They certainly have the power to do so." (Tim Wise, author, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son). Registration is required, beginning June 15; call 688-9580 or register online. A limited number of books are available for checkout at the Angelou Library, first-come, first served. This event is a special after-hours book discussion; the Library closes at 6:00 pm, but will re-open the meeting room at 6:45 for this program.
